About James Moss

For 33 years Mr. Moss has specialized in the repair and restoration of antique time pieces. During the latter period of that time, he augmented his horological education by studying accepted museum methods of object conservation and he applied these techniques to the conservation of clocks.

In 1993, after having proven to other Conservation Professionals that he was capable of performing the responsibilities of a Professional Conservator and that he was willing to adhere to the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (commonly known in the Conservation field as the AIC), he became a Professional Associate member (see What Is Conservation for more information).

Since 1969, in addition to restoring and conserving clocks, Mr. Moss has been commissioned to custom design and hand-make approximately 50 sundials of various designs that are so accurate that you can use them to set your watch!

In addition to the sundials, Mr. Moss, in collaboration with Mr. Richard Ketchen and Mr. Peter Harvey, made a reproduction of a Shaker Wall clock by Isaacs Young completely by hand that appeared in one of Public Television NOVA series. He has presented many technical presentations to the New England Chapter of the NAWCC as well as to various historical societies in the surrounding area. He has written an short paper on the hazards of using ammonia to clean clocks that was published in Europe and the U.S.
